CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTGS) — An NFL linebacker is in Savannah for a youth football camp.
Just two hours away from Jacksonville, Jaguars’ linebacker Devin Lloyd is at the Fort Stewart army base, teaching young boys and girls the skills and drills of football.
“Somebody in the NFL coming out and really offering their time to them, that’s something I want them to do in the future and I hope that’s what they can take from it. Even if it’s their parents telling them down the line, you see somebody in the position, I am and as grateful as I am to be in this position, to take time out of their day, to service other kids, hopefully, that’s the lasting impact that they leave,” said Lloyd.
The camp hosts at least 150 military children in the first through eighth grades.
This is Lloyd’s second camp and says he understands how important this is for military children because he’s also one.
“My dad actually just retired a couple of years ago, he served 30 years in the military, Navy. My mom served 10 years in the Navy, and they met in the Navy. She got out when she had me. Growing up it was just a military household. My dad would go on deployments at times. So I understand the difficulties of growing up in a military household,” he said.
Lloyd added that giving back to the community of kids and playing a sport that he loves is just a bonus to see both young girls and boys enjoy the sport of football.
“The game just does so much for everybody, and nobody should be excluded from that. So to have boys and girls out here is amazing, and it just shows the growth and how far we’ve come,” he said.
