The No. 4 Florida State softball team (40-8) picked up another win with a 5-3 victory over the No. 15 Florida Gators in front of a crowd of 1,836, the third largest crowd in school history, at JoAnne Graf Field on Wednesday evening. The Seminoles have now won four-straight games against Florida which ties the Seminoles longest win streak in the series.
The Gators capitalized on a leadoff walk to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Noles were able to match them with a shot into right field from Mack Leonard, scoring Kaley Mudge.
Starter Makenna Reid settled in in the second inning and recorded two strikeouts and a groundout to retire the Gators in order. Michaela Edenfield walked, and Hallie Wacaser reached on an error to put two runners in scoring position for Katie Dack. After hitting a ball just outside the left field foul pole, Dack straightened it out and hit it off the top of the wall to bring home Edenfield to give the Noles the 2-1 lead.
The Gators regained the lead off a home to make the score 3-2 in the third inning. Ali DuBois came in and gave the Noles some life as she struck out all three batters she faced in the fourth inning.
Wacaser led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single, and Dack walked to put runners on first and second. Josie Muffley continued her hot streak with a double into left field scoring both Wacaser and Dack to give the Noles the lead. Mudge slapped at a ball that reached the pitcher’s circle, but Muffley was able to score to extend the lead to two.
Kathryn Sandercock would then take the mound in the top of fifth and racked up three strikeouts while allowing only two hits and no runs in the 2.2 innings pitched. DuBois was credited with the win to move to 5-3, and Sandercock picked up her 7th save of the year.
The Noles will next travel to Notre Dame where they will face the Fighting Irish on Friday, April 28 at 6:00 p.m. on ACC Network.
