HOW IT HAPPENED
Jacksonville (9-7, ASUN 5-1) women’s lacrosse came out fired up for its match up against No.8 Florida, but the Gators (13-3, AAC 4-1) began with a 4-0 run.
Graduate student Lauren Craft notched the first of her five goals for the Dolphins at 2:53 to show the score 4-1 Gators.
Florida scored its fifth goal of the game to kick off the second quarter. Craft answered for Jacksonville with back-to-back goals to close the gap to 5-3 Florida. The Gators notched two more goals only to be answered by two shots from Jacksonville; Craft earned her fourth goal of the game and graduate student midfielder Molly Brock scored on an amazing play pulling outside the 12 meter to receive a pass, beat her defender and charge through the 8-meters hitting net.The score at the half is 8-5 Gators.
The Gators went on to score six of the next seven goals. Craft had her fifth goal with an assist from senior attack Grace Hobson, to score Jacksonville’s only goal of the quarter.
Jacksonville came out with momentum in the fourth quarter. Junior Brianna Samuel wasted no time off the draw, quickly transitioning down the field to score, showing the score 15-7. Graduate student Sarah Elms notched her first goal of the game half way through the fourth quarter, followed by a pair of goals from senior Grace Hobson. The Dolphins allowed Florida just two goals to end the game. Despite a final goal by Samuels, the Dolphins’ momentum was just not enough to defeat the Gators.
“I am really proud of our fight and resilience, this team does not go away,” said head coach Tara Singleton. “We shifted up some things on the draw and gained momentum off the possessions which was great for us.”
