A new sports complex is coming to south Jackson in the old Jackson Square Promenade.
The demolition phase of the project is underway at what’s now called the Jackson City Plaza. It will cost $500,000 to knock down a portion of the old strip mall to create a sports complex and education center.
The Juanita Doty Sims Foundation is teaming up with former NBA player and Jackson native Erick Dampier to bring the project to life.
“We have to show our youth that this is what city revitalization and growth is, where it comes from,” said Karla McCullough, the co-owner of City Plaza. “It comes from within. We can’t count on everybody from outside of our city to help develop the city.
The goal is to break ground in November, then finish construction in 13 months. The full project of the City Plaza is $55 million, with just over half of the funds raised so far. Once completed, the shopping plaza will have a hotel, plus residential and commercial spaces.
“In five to 10 years, this whole thing could be the start of revitalizing the whole area, and we’re going to try to make that a reality,” Dampier said.
